The Prizes

English Version | CYMRAEG

A prize is to be awarded to the best dressed person in each of two categories:

i) traditional Welsh (e.g. Welsh shawl, ffedog, traditional hat, or breeches/waistcoat/ collarless shirt or ‘celtic’ traditional: cilt, ysgrepan and siaced)

ii) dress or costume, suitable for “celebrating St David's Day and pride in Wales” – this also includes traditional dress not from Wales e.g. Cornish, Scottish, Punjabi.

The prizes, worth £100 in each category, will be awarded to either a charity registered and/or working in Wales or an educational institution or establishment such as a school or college in Wales, of the winner's choice.

All entries will be considered for either category, unless the entrant specifies which category they are entering.

The judges reserve the right to divide the prize among several winners, at their discretion.

Entering

Entry is by submission of a photograph (no more than two images and no more than one entry per contestant):

  • taken of the entrant in costume,
  • on March 1st, on the National St David’s Day Parade  Cardiff or at one of the locations it passes (see  route map)

The photograph may be taken by someone other than the entrant, but it is a condition of entry that both the photographer and the subject of the photograph must have given their permission for the photograph to be published, copyright free.

We need to have the names, addresses and telephone numbers of the subject (AND parent or guardian, if under 16) AND the photographer on the back of each print or in the case of e-mails, in the e-mail submitting the image.

Neither prints nor image files can be returned; please do not send the only copy of an original, if you treasure it!

Deadline:

All entries must be received by e-mail or by post no later than 12.00 noon, Monday, March 8th 2010 to the e-mail and/or postal address below.

or post prints to:

Eligibility:

The competition is open to all, but children under 16 must have the permission of parents or guardians to enter and for their picture to be published.

Judging:

The entries will be judged by a panel including but not limited to:

Senior Photographer Andrew Davies, The South Wales Echo; David Petersen, National St David's Day Parade, Marc Evans, Parade Coordinator and Cllr Nigel Howells, Cardiff Council’s Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture. The decision of the judges shall be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

The names of the winners will be published in the South Wales Echo and on the website www.stdavidsday.org in due course.

Advice

The award shall be made, in the traditional category, on the apparent authenticity of the costume and accoutrements, the style and the confidence of the wearer - and to a lesser degree, the strength of the picture itself in conveying this.

The award in the category ‘celebrating St David’s Day’ will be made on the originality and appropriately celebratory expression of costume and wearer in enjoying St David's Day, the patron saint of Wales (this may include reference to any of the national icons of Wales, past or present or traditional dress not from Wales e.g. Cornish, Scottish, Punjabi etc).

Costumes may be hired, borrowed or adapted, but in these cases, the owner/creator/originator must have given express permission and by entering you agree to have obtained permission before submitting your entry.
